I suspect the surname is IURATO common to Santa Croce Camerina (provincia Ragusa). Go to www.paginebianche.it and look surname for any potential relatives and go to ellisisland.org for entry information. Peter

In Italian "urato", is a very specific chemical adjective, indicating a salt of uric acid.

I'd say that a change in the first vowel is quite probable, considering the word "irato" is more common and means "angry".

Maybe you can check if in Siracusa the surname "Irato" is still common.

Enerbronzo can't you read english or would you preferire Italiano?? I already advised the inquirer where to look in the province of ragusa to find the town of origin. Santaarcangelo di romagna is the town most noted for the surname. The surname is derived from GERACE and is a variation. Peter

Dear MKU61. The surname Iuarato is a variationof the surname GERACE which is most common in Calabria and ending with GERACI in Sicily. In sicily the name is further derived historically from IERAKI and IERACI which are from Byzantine "Hagla Kyriake" which in italian is Santa Ciriaca (chirico). Peter

"Iurato", of course! Quite obvious I'm not a genealogist, mmm?

The Italian sound of Iurato is the same (well, more or less) of the English Urato, so it's obvious the first I was lost in some transcription. Not a surprise considering my enrbonza became enrabronzo! :)

Are you sure Iurato is not coming from vulgar latin?

Iurato, evolving in the modern giurato (another common family name, here) and meaning "sworn".

HI, probable that:
-the surname is URRATA and all people with this surname coming from Siracusa province, especially from Lentini and Carlentini commons.. this surname coming from an sicilian dialectal word, I know not the means..

Dear mku61,

There is a census (1930 United States Federal Census > New Jersey > Bergen > Hackensack > District 105) of a John Iurato.

If this is the correct one, I can link it to this post.

Name:   John Iurato (immigrated in 1911)
Age:   42
Estimated birth year:   abt 1888
Birthplace:   Italy
Relation to head-of-house:   Head
Race:   White
Home in 1930:   Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey

Wife - Josephine (immigrated 1908)

Sons - Samuel and Anthony, both born in New Jersey.

Hope this helps.
Happy New Year! mfjp

There are 5 (count them!) FIVE GIOVANNI IURATO who entered the USA. Without much fanfare you arbitrarily picked one without any real point of information except your obvious wondrous intuition or you would have explained why you chose this one and not the other 4???? It may be a lucky shot and its him but its not good genealogy to pick soemthing out of the air without rationale. Oh by the way Happy New Year. Peter
