I'm looking to find anything on Urato surname. My grandparents are from sicily, the family tells me saracusa, and ragusa.
I've hit a dead end cannot find anything maybe my grandfather change the spelling he was born around 1890's.
his name was John Urato.

In Italian "urato", is a very specific chemical adjective, indicating a salt of uric acid.

I'd say that a change in the first vowel is quite probable, considering the word "irato" is more common and means "angry".

Maybe you can check if in Siracusa the surname "Irato" is still common.

Dear MKU61. The surname Iuarato is a variationof the surname GERACE which is most common in Calabria and ending with GERACI in Sicily. In sicily the name is further derived historically from IERAKI and IERACI which are from Byzantine "Hagla Kyriake" which in italian is Santa Ciriaca (chirico). Peter

The Italian sound of Iurato is the same (well, more or less) of the English Urato, so it's obvious the first I was lost in some transcription. Not a surprise considering my enrbonza became enrabronzo!

Are you sure Iurato is not coming from vulgar latin?

Iurato, evolving in the modern giurato (another common family name, here) and meaning "sworn".

-the surname is URRATA and all people with this surname coming from Siracusa province, especially from Lentini and Carlentini commons.. this surname coming from an sicilian dialectal word, I know not the means..

My Dad said he remembers his father talking about siracusa. He had a brother name Sam who lived in chicago, Illinious USA after coming to usa

There are 5 (count them!) FIVE GIOVANNI IURATO who entered the USA. Without much fanfare you arbitrarily picked one without any real point of information except your obvious wondrous intuition or you would have explained why you chose this one and not the other 4???? It may be a lucky shot and its him but its not good genealogy to pick soemthing out of the air without rationale. Oh by the way Happy New Year. Peter
