I have also contacted the Dutchess County clerk's office and asked them for naturalization records, but they haven't gotten back to me either. I'm not sure how long these things take on a county level, but I submitted my request online, so I may have faster results if I go in person
I just noticed that the Mormons microfilmed these documents:

Topic New York, Dutchess - Naturalization and citizenship

so, maybe it could be helpful for you to check this microfilm:

Although Pasqua Santini actually arrived in the US on the December 19, 1913 sailing of the S.S. America, she had been booked on the previous November 11, 1913 sailing as the manifest below shows.

The fact that her name is lined out indicates that she did not sail; there are any number of possible reasons for this including illness and/or simply arriving at the pier too late.

She is on line 16. The record is indexed under "Pasgus Sautini".

^ Ohh thank you very much for this! I had no idea she was going to make an earlier journey.

Pink67, thanks so much for the information. I went to my local LDS Family Center tonight (I think that's what it's called) and ordered the microfilm for naturalization records 1919 - 1922. As my grandfather was born in October 1920, I figure that would cover my bases in regards to potential Italian citizenship. I would've ordered the rest but it was $5.50 per roll, and I can look all of this stuff up for free at the county clerk's office. (Though the Mormons keep better hours!)

It should be in within two weeks, so hopefully I'll know more soon! :)

In an earlier post I mentioned that there are six Olivieri's in Sulmona today and that you might try writing to some/all of them.

As it turns out, there are six Santini's as well. This might prove even more interesting if you write and inquire if anyone can help you figure out the Pasqua Santini / Antonina Capotoi link.

I've found all this very interesting, not least because I also had family that came from Sulmona. All the contributors have done fantastic work.

I would like to add my two cents to the discussion on Pasqua Santini/Anna Capotoli. First, most likely the name Capotoli should be Capitoli (this is the actual word for chapters (plural) in Italian). Most likely there was a transcription error made somewhere along the line because, as someone already said, Capotoli does not exist as a surname in Italy. However, there are 44 Capitoli families throughout Italy today and four of them are still in Sulmona.

Capitoli in Sulmona

I have a little more that might be helpful. That was a great find of the earlier ship manifest, especially as the name seems to be Sautini Pargus. I don't know if you saw it, but there is a very interesting name on the same page. Just four lines above Pasqua Santini's name there is a man named Michele Capitoli, 20 years older than your great-grandmother, and he is leaving behind in Sulmona a wife named Carolina. Of the four Capitoli families still in Sulmona, one is Michele and one is Carolina. To me that seems like a good place to start if you wish to contact someone Sulmona.

If I were a betting man, I would wager a goodly sum that this Michele Capitoli being on the same ship (that she unfortunately missed) and being listed in a string of five names all from Sulmona (including your great-grandmother), was not a coincidence and that Michele and Pasqua were somehow connected, if not related.

On its own I don't think this gives us a definitive answer as to whether your great-grandmother was first Pasqua Santini or Anna Capitoli. But I think it does suggest that she was probably born Pasqua Santini (which, because that is what her atto di nascita says, she had to use as her official name when she emigrated) and that she may have been a foster child in the home of the Capitoli family, but probably not adopted or else she would have travelled under the name Capitoli. While this time I wouldn't want to bet on it, I'm inclined to lean in this direction. It seems that for anything official (which included the US Census taking), she used her birth name Pasqua, but within the family and perhaps informally elsewhere she went by her name Anna.

Hope this helps. I'm curious to know if you've learned anything since your last post.

Hi Hayley,
This may not be helpful, but my father's family are Olivieri's as well. His father was from Rocca Grimalda, so if you cannot find records in Sulmona, you might try looking further north in Italy. When my grandfather immigrated, he came into New York but made his way to California. My father said some cousins did stop in New York, according to his father. Also, there was another branch of the family who went to Argentina. Anyway, there were supposed to have been a number of Olivieri's in N. Italy. If your grandfather was not from Sulmona, he may have traveled through there on the way to a port.

Hi, Read your post. My hubby's family are Olivieri's . They stopped in Pennsylvania and ended up in New jersey but his brother and sister went out to California. Just wondering if there is any relation. Grandpa was Ulderigo Ulivieri/ Olivieri , he changed it when his children were born Freda, Gino and Nello. Any relations?
